Meet Genysia Brown

Genysia Brown is a Chicago-based director creating work that explores cultural intersections between disparate communities and what it can teach our highly polarized society. Their work is specific to the present moment and the surrounding community in order to challenge and spark conversation. She uses identity conscious casting practices in order to build stories with cultural specificity that lend themselves to universal experiences and storytelling. She would love to change the world one day and plan to do so by starting with her community.

Her directing credits include Fairview, The Gulf, and The Waiting Period. Last season, Genysia was a director in Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Emerging Professional Residency. She assistant directed Come From Away (dir. Mark Clements), A Christmas Carol (dir. Mark Clements), and The Piano Lesson (dir. Lou Bellamy). Last summer, Genysia assistant directed All’s Well That Ends Well (dir. Rob Salas) at New Swan Shakespeare Festival. She is also the casting and voice director for Not Half Bad Games’ debut project Unfathomable Titans. Genysia is currently a board member for CREATE Theater Fund.

Genysia graduated in June 2025 from the University of California, Irvine with a B.A. in Drama and Honors in Directing. From 2023-2025, she served as Co-President of Black Door Theater Company, UC Irvine’s only theater company dedicated to supporting artists of the African Diaspora and their stories.
